Market relationships
How the analyst evaluates drivers, direction, timing, geography and market state.
A contract enters funded construction only when its selected side can be defended in the owner's harmful world.
Driver
The contract should observe the same variable or a plausible related benchmark. A labeled proxy can be useful. Similar words without an economic path are not enough.
Direct relationships share the trigger, while proxy relationships use a related benchmark. A correlated relationship can remain useful when the path is explicit and its limitation is material. An informative relationship stays as a signal.
Direction
The analyst reasons through YES and NO from the exact contract. Funding stops when neither side can be defended or when the required side lacks a valid displayed paid price.
Application guards can correct an unambiguous high-or-low inversion. Unknown binary events remain a reasoning decision. They are not mechanically forced to YES or NO.
Timing
Timing is graded as exact, partial, leading, lagging or recurring. A short observation can protect a slice of a longer exposure. The explanation must keep that limitation clear.
Geography
Geography matters only when the contract or governing exposure is inherently local or jurisdictional; national rates and commodity benchmarks usually do not depend on the owner's street address.
Market state
The contract must remain open and structurally valid. Thin activity, quote age and an extreme price provide context. They do not automatically remove or resize a plausible relationship.
Practical examples
| Exposure | Contract | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel costs rise | Retail gasoline above a threshold | Useful labeled proxy because both follow the pump-price driver. |
| Orlando weather disruption | New York daily temperature | Reject because the local observation is for the wrong place. |
| Annual fuel pressure | One short energy observation | Partial or recurring relationship; do not describe it as full-year protection. |
| National borrowing cost | Federal rate outcome | Geography usually does not matter. |
| Equipment failure | Local heat record | Related context with the wrong settlement trigger; keep as a rejected alternative or signal. |
The final explanation states the economic path and one material limitation, without burying the decision under generic liquidity, trust or timing caveats.
